What happens when you marry a traditional concept with modern design? One result is the Norwalk Islands Sharpies, a line of trailerable sailboats from the desk of Bruce Kirby.

Intended for amateur builders, these craft combine the best of the sharpie design--shallow draft, ease of construction, simple sailing rigs, seaworthiness--with modern contruction materials. The hulls are made of plywood, coated with epoxy and fiberglass for strength and durability. The unstayed masts (except for the 31 and 43) are made of aluminum, fiberglass, wood, or even carbon fiber. Unlike their traditional cousins, these sharpies have more comfortable cruising interiors. The flat bottoms make them easy to trailer and launch, which extends the cruising possibilities.

This site offers information and encouragement to those who are considering building, owning, or already own an NIS. Here you will find stories of construction and cruising as well as pictures of each model. If you have more to contribute, please send it to the webmaster link below and it will be included.
